There many things to enjoy during summer in Manila such as the warm sunshine, green grass, and beautiful outdoors. The best part would be the availability of healthy and fresh foods as these are abundant and more affordable during the season. Summer is around the corner, and there’s no other way to spend it than cooling off with the perfect Filipino dessert.
This is the season where we get to swim, explore, and taste yummy treats. Summer would not be complete without ice creams, cold drinks, and fresh fruits. From barbeques to fresh fruit shakes, summer is definitely the most awaited season especially when celebrating with good company and great food. Here are 5 cold desserts you can create to beat the scorching heat of summer:
Halo-Halo
One way to relieve from the summer heat is to indulge in the Filipino favorite, the Halo-Halo. From vendors inside villages to fast food chains and up to well-known hotels, each has created their own version of this popular treat. Some even use unique ingredients to level up their creation. This delight normally contains leche flan, macapuno strips, langka, red mungo, grated cheese, lots of nata de coco, scoop of ice cream, milk, and ube jam which sits on top of the crushed ice. In some stores, they even add cornflakes, bananas, and pinipig. This is truly a classic dessert that warms the hearts of Filipino and a must try when you visit the country.
Mais con Yelo
Just like the ever-famous halo-halo, Mais con Yelo is one of the desserts Filipino considered essential during this period. The name Mais con Yelo actually comes from the Spanish word “Maiz con Hielo” which means “corn with ice”. This is also seen being sold in street markets along with halo-halo. Halo-halo may be the crowd favorite, but this dessert also deserves a spot on the list. For those in a hurry and don’t have much free time in their hands, you can easily make this one at home. Ingredients needed are 1 to 2 cups of shaved ice, 1 tablespoon of sugar, 1 tablespoon of cornflakes for toppings, ½ cup kernel corn, and ½ cup condensed milk.
Fruit Popsicle Sticks
When the temperature is at its peak, there is no better way than to cool it off with some homemade popsicle sticks. Nearly all of us have fond memories of chilling down with a popsicle on one hand. During this season there’s nothing more children and even adults want than popsicles. What better ingredient to use than fresh fruits, right? For those people who are trying to survive the heat, here is some of the fruit flavor combinations alongside their ingredients:

Ice Cream
It is common knowledge that ice creams are the most important dessert of the day, especially during summer. During times when the heat is unbearable, we find comfort in ice creams. This is an ultimate treat worldwide as it also offers a variety of flavors that each one of use will enjoy. A simple recipe of ice cream would normally include 4 cups of heavy cream, 2 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 1 can of condensed milk, and flavoring. You can also add chops of fresh fruits, nuts, or chocolate chips for added flavor.
Fresh Fruit Shakes
Summer is the season where we get to travel and explore. Normally, even whenever we go out of town, we can always see local fresh fruit shakes being served and ordered by a lot of people. Some people even visit our country just to get a taste of our tropical fruit shakes. Some of the famous shakes our country has to offer are mango, watermelon, and melon. Fresh buko is also popular in our country to the point that even restaurants and hotels serve this as it is. Luckily, for us fruit shakes can also be easily done at home as we are abundant in local produce and fruits can be bought everywhere. To do it at home, all you need is fruit of your choice, milk, sugar, and shaved ice.
